Nikolina Kamenova Dobreva (Bulgarian: Николина Каменова Добрева, pronounced [ˈnikolinɐ ˈdɔbrɛvɐ]; born January 9, 1989),[1] known professionally as Nina Dobrev ( DOH-brev), is a Canadian extra. Her first acting role was as Mia Jones in the CTV drama series Degrassi: The Next Generation. She later became known for portraying Elena Gilbert and Katherine Pierce on The CW's supernatural drama series The Vampire Diaries.

Dobrev has also appeared in several characteristic films, including the 2012 coming-of-age drama The Perks of Beingness a Wallflower, the 2014 action comedy Allow'southward Be Cops, the 2015 horror comedy The Final Girls, the 2017 action thriller 30: Render of Xander Cage, and the 2017 science-fiction drama Flatliners.

Early life

Dobrev was built-in Nikolina Kamenova Dobreva in Sofia, Bulgaria (then the People's Republic of Bulgaria), and immigrated to Canada at age two, where she was raised in Toronto, Ontario.[2] [3] Her father, Kamen Dobrev, is a computer specialist and her mother, Michaela Dobreva (née Radeva), is an artist. She has an older brother.[four]

Dobrev attended Vradenburg Junior Public Schoolhouse and J. B. Tyrrell Sr. Public School, where she started ballet and jazz classes and competed in rhythmic gymnastics.[3] She took acting classes at Armstrong Interim Studios in Toronto.[five] Dobrev subsequently attended the arts program at Wexford Collegiate School for the Arts in Scarborough[6] until her graduating year.

Dobrev entered post-secondary studies at Ryerson University in Toronto, majoring in sociology,[vii] though her pursuit of an acting career prevented her from graduating.[eight]

Career

Dobrev's first major acting role was equally Mia on the teen drama boob tube serial Degrassi: The Side by side Generation, a part she played for iii seasons starting in 2006.[ii] She appeared in several characteristic films in the mid-2000s, including Avoiding Pieces and Away from Her. Dobrev also headlined a number of television films, including Sci Fi Channel's Never Cry Werewolf,[9] MTV'southward The American Mall,[10] and two Lifetime original movies.

Activism and charity

Dobrev supports multiple charitable causes, including Puma'due south 2011 not-profit Project Pink, which supports numerous chest cancer charities, and Hunger Bites, an system that is dedicated to reducing hunger in 27 districts beyond Pennsylvania. Dobrev is also recognized for her long-term interest with the We movement, a Canadian-based charity which empowers youth to exist agents of change.
